The major highways, like this one outside of Kyiv, can be snow-covered also. |

Horses are often more reliable than cars, especially since roads are not cleared. This horse was outside the office of the mayor, village of Svitilne, Brovars'kyi region, November 16, 1998. |

A farmstead is a complex enterprise. It has to accommodate not just people, but animals and crops. Sometimes the storage areas are appended to the house as here. The more delicate farm implements and crops that do not need to be kept very cold can be stored here. Usually, people keep food stuffs that are soon to be consumed in house-adjacent storage areas. |

The doorway to a major storage area called a komora. The door opens to a staircase that leads underground where there is a large cellar in which potatoes, beets, carrots, cabbages and most of the household's food supply is kept. The komora was also often the place where a newly married couple spent their first night. |

Some houses are quite prosperous. This photo has an interesting mix of a traditional komora on the right and the modern "storage" building for the family car, the garage, on the left. |

No doorway to a house leads out onto the street. Sometimes the wall of a house is along a street, as in cities where there is a shortage of space, but the entrance to the house is from a courtyard to the side or in the back. In villages, where there is more room, there is an enclosed yard separating the house from the street. |

No space is wasted and the yard is used for everything: messier chores, such as those done on the table to the left, storage of farm implements, keeping chickens. |
