Discussion Section Policies

Evaluation

Grade: 20% of your final grade is determined by your work in discussion section. Discussion section grades will be determined by attendance, class participation and occasional written work.

Class Participation: You are required to do all the assigned readings for the course and come prepared to class to discuss them. Your participation will be noted each week in discussion section and, at the end, tallied for your final participation grade.

Attendance: Discussion section attendance is mandatory. Attendance will be taken at each discussion section. Three unexcused absences will result in grade of 0 for discussion section (note: this is 20% of your final grade). If you have good reason to miss class (ie a family member died, you need to have surgery, something similar), please notify me at least 24 hours in advance, by e-mail.

Papers: The paper policy for the course is as follows. Written assignments must be turned in on time. You have until 5 PM on the day the paper is due to turn it in. Assignments should be submitted either in class or in my mailbox in the Slavic Department (Cabell 109). If, for some reason, you cannot get your work in on time, you must request an extension from me at least 48 hours in advance. Work submitted late, either beyond the original due date or beyond the extension date, will be docked 1/3 grade for each day that it is late.

Goals

1) To provide a forum in which to bring up concerns and questions about the readings and lectures.

2) To create an atmosphere more conducive to discussion and examination of the readings, lectures, and other course materials than lecture.

Expectations

1) Arrive on time. Constant tardiness will result in a lower grade.

2) Do the assigned readings for the course. As you read, write down comments or questions that occur to you for use in discussion section.

3) Come prepared to class. Bring the week's reading, paper and pen to class. You are responsible for the information discussed in section.

4) Complete writing assignments on time. Late assignments will result in grade reduction.

5) And, most important, participate actively in class discussions! Remember that discussion section is something that we do for you, so that you can discuss and ask questions about course material.
