Undergraduate
Researchers: Vivek Ayer / Melissa Rich / Andrew
Strand
Vivek is
from Farmville, Virginia. He is chemistry major
with a
specialization in biochemistry. He is also pursuing a major in physics.
In the lab, he is testing the effectiveness of coating a carbon-fiber
electrode with carbon nanotubes. Hopefully, this will improve
sensitivity. Outside of the lab, he strives to play tennis like Roger
Federer and promotes open source software. Hopefully, he plans to go to
medical school after college.

Melissa is
a biochemistry major from Stafford, Va. She is working on
making fibers
from carbon nanotubes, which she believes will improve the sensitivity
of carbon fiber microelectrodes. In her free time, Melissa is a
violinist in the UVa Baroque Orchestra and reads any science-fiction
she can find. After graduation, she is planning on attending medical
school.

Andrew
is from
Fredericksburg, Virginia. He is a chemistry major with a specialization
in biochemistry. He also has a minor in mathematics. In the lab, he is
testing flame etched electrodes in order to make the electrodes
smaller. This will do less damage to an organism when inserted. Outside
of the lab, he plays several IM sports.

Eshwarswamy
Kumar
is from
Chitradurga, India. He received a Ph.D. from Kuvempu University in
Department of Industrial Chemistry, Karnataka in 2002 and received the
Young Scientist Award in 2000 from Indian Council of Chemists. He was a
postdoctoral research associate in Chemistry department at Southern
Methodist University Dallas, Texas. Currently he is working on
microelectrodes and biosensors. His hobbies are listening to music and
playing indoor games.
